Some Tips To Help Weatherize Your Home

by The Ramsey Rhoads Group

Here are a few ways you can weatherize your home for winter.

Today we’re going to talk about what you can do to weatherize your home as we head into the winter months. Here are a few things you should think about to help your property withstand our central Pennsylvania weather:

Keep your gutters cleaned out. With all of the leaves falling, it’s easy for your gutters to get clogged. It’s still wet in the winter here. All that water can freeze in your gutters, which is very bad for your roof and your foundation.

Make sure your spigots are turned off. Go to all of your outside spigots, make sure they’re drained, and then turn them off. You can even buy some covers for them.

Check your doors and windows. Make sure they all shut nice and tight and that there’s no draft. If there is, you can put some resin bags under the door jamb to help seal it more. Keep in mind that some local utility companies or counties do energy audits or weatherization programs for houses.

You have to prepare your home as we head into the colder months.

Clean out your dryer vent. The dryer vent is one of the biggest fire hazards in your home. You should probably clean it out around this time of year. It’s easy to think about the dryer filter, but the dryer vent needs to be cleaned too.

Change the furnace filter. It’s a good time to get this prepared for winter.

Check your smoke and CO detectors. Make sure they’re all working and not making that annoying beep.
